Title: Deep RL for learning to assist bounded human agents
Keywords: Human-AI interaction, Deep RL, Cooperative RL
Description: One of our missions at the PML group is to create AI assistants that can help humans solve problems in an ad-hoc fashion. For this we need AI agents that can quickly infer and adapt to the goals, bounds, knowledge and any other factor that influences the policy of a human they interact with. So far we have tackled this problem using model-based RL, and have applied our methods to a number of problem domains including engineering design. In this project you will use the models and environments we have developed to train a deep RL agent to assist (simulated) humans.
Note: Applications are required to have a basic understanding of reinforcement learning and a willingness to learn Julia. Knowledge of probabilistic modelling, Bayesian inference and multi-agent modelling will be benefitial.

Researcher positions

Postdoc positions in the Probabilistic Machine Learning Group. Search here for the topics from Samuel Kaski or Aki Vehtari. The deadline for applications is January 30th, 2022 at 11:59pm Finnish Time (Eastern European Standard Time) (GMT + 2).

FCAI is searching for postdocs, research fellows and doctoral researchers. There are excellent positions, many involving the Probabilistic Machine Learning group. Check the topics here. Summer internship

We offer summer intern positions for students. For Aalto students, the Department of Computes Science has opened a new call . International students can apply trhough AScI program .

General info

Postdocs

For positions in the group, please follow the job advertisements at

Exceptionally good applicants are always welcome to apply – contact Prof. Samuel Kaski, Prof. Aki Vehtari, the other professors or postdocs.

Doctoral students

Many of our doctoral students have started as research assistants in the group. We hire doctoral students mostly from Master's programmes that provide relevant background knowledge for our research areas, such as the major in Machine Learning and Data Mining (Macadamia), and also from HICT calls.

The most promising Bachelor students have also the opportunity to move directly to the Doctoral studies via the Doctoral track.

Masters students

The best method to join our group is to enroll in Macadamia (The major in Machine Learning and Data Mining) or Bioinformatics, or some other relevant major at Aalto, proceed rapidly in the studies with good grades, and apply in our calls for summer interns. The majors also have honors programmes.

Bachelors students

Enroll a Bachelor's programme in Aalto, do well in math and other important subjects, and apply in our calls for summer interns.

The most promising Bachelor students have the opportunity to move directly to the doctoral studies via the Doctoral track.

Summer Interns

We take part in Aalto Science Institute AScI internship programme (for international students) and in the Aalto University Department of Computer Science intership call (Aalto students). The application period typically opens in January.
